Carney says U.S. trade talks have intensified; Michigan elects tariff critic El-Sayed

Carney said Nov. 3 that U.S. trade talks have intensified but no deal is done, and tariff critic Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Senate seat. Midwest diesel fell to $6.402 a gallon for the week of Nov. 2. No current wait readings were available this morning.

At the border

We could not retrieve Wednesday morning wait readings before publishing, so check live wait times before dispatching. U.S.-bound readings were also unavailable.

The newest Canada-bound commercial readings we could confirm are from CBSA and are nearly a day old, from Tuesday, Nov. 3:

  • Ambassador: 10 minutes at 8:59 a.m.
  • Gordie Howe: no delay at 5:15 a.m.
  • Blue Water: no delay at 8:15 a.m.

Elsewhere that morning, Peace Bridge showed 4 minutes and Lewiston–Queenston 2 minutes at 10:00 a.m. The Soo had no delay at 8:15 a.m. Analysis: these describe election-day conditions, not today's. We found no closure reports.

On trade, speaking in Antigua on Tuesday, Prime Minister Carney said talks with Washington have become more intense since his call with President Trump. "We've made progress but we haven't finished," he said, adding that U.S. demands have eased while its offer has improved. He did not name the open issues. Trump told Fox News the same day that a deal would come soon.

The Canadian Press report did not mention steel or auto duties, and no terms are public. Analysis: keep pricing loads on the duties now in force.

In Michigan, the AP reported that Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers for U.S. Senate. In September, El-Sayed called the trade fight with Canada "chaotic, ham-fisted, self-serving." Analysis: that adds a critical Michigan voice but changes nothing at the booth.

Diesel

EIA's Nov. 2 survey has the Midwest at $6.402 a gallon, down from $6.480 on Oct. 26. The U.S. average is $6.292. The next release is Nov. 10.

We could not load Ontario's official survey or a Windsor forecast. Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy forecasts Toronto-area diesel at 235.9¢ a litre today and a 4-cent rise Thursday, to about 239.9¢.

Analysis, rough math at USD/CAD near 1.40 (Nov. 3 afternoon): about about US$6.38 a gallon today and US$6.49 Thursday. Against the Midwest figure, Ontario is about even today and roughly 8 cents dearer Thursday. This is a Toronto forecast, not a Windsor price: direction only. See the diesel page.

What we're watching

  • Flying Trucks. CBP's process allowing air manifests for truck-borne express cargo ends Nov. 24. Analysis: shippers using express carriers should confirm truck manifest filing now.
  • CBP import disclosures. An advance notice floats requiring foreign export documents and more supply-chain identifiers, plus CTPAT changes. It sets no new requirements yet. Comments close Dec. 1, docket USCBP-2026-1058.
  • Windsor Assembly. As of Oct. 29, production was idled through the week of Nov. 9, with no return date given. Talks with Unifor were paused despite a 97.3% strike vote, and neither side had sought a no-board report. We found nothing newer.
